When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner.
When our flag starts to fray, we always take it down to the local VFW. Just as this code mandates, they take them in and burn them during a special ceremony. When I first started taking our flags there, the gentleman at the Lodge seemed quite surprised that I (as someone quite a bit younger than he) would even be aware of their care for the flag. I explained I was the daughter of a Navy officer, and he brightened a bit and thanked me. It made me think that not many people take their flags thereā¦.
