The wired story doesn’t even bother to use qualifiers, but says “right wing memes” straight. Not extremist or far-right, just right.

The narrative is, all right-wingers are at least kooks, so can you imagine what the right-wing extremists can do? Luckily the DHS is watching them!

The problem for conservatives and the GOP is that their reaction makes them look like apologists for this behavior. It would have been a whole lot smarter to just say that if the DHS finds violent extremists of any political fringe that conservatives and republicans support the government’s work against such extremists.

And then Michael Steele would have had a golden opportunity to make major TV appearances denouncing extremists and racists like Stormfront.

I see the conservative/GOP response as at best a missed opportunity or at worst another self-inflicted political wound.
