You could call them unethical assholes who don’t understand the basics of their jobs— to protect the general safety and welfare. You could call them any number of things.

So why is calling them one particular derogatory word so important?

More to the point, why on Earth is the use of that word so offensive here. I mean, sure, I could have called them a number of colorful derogatory words. Anyway, it’s important to me because of their place in society - they are armed, they have the power to arrest and detain citizens, and use violence at their discretion. I thought about calling them fascists but I thought that was too harsh for that situation.
