on a semi-serious note, what may be happening is that these people are not suddenly stupid. Instead, they are experiencing what happens when otherwise reasonably intelligent people have to try to convince themselves that the bullshit they know is bullshit is something that must be defended. They go through a kind of cognitive dissonance where they can’t keep all the balls in the air. It’s why top Nazis turned out to be such sick fuckers in the end. Not all of them started out as psychopaths, but once you’ve had a meeting in a building where there are still Jews hanging from the ceilings by piano wire, you undergo a kind of psychic break where you lose whatever thread was keeping you connected to reality.
