Maher’s bit is horseshit because’s it about claiming that context doesn’t matter, and that it’s some kind of “gotcha” for people to react strongly to a quote presented in a deceptive context.

So basically, the exact opposite of what everyone arguing against #CancelColbert is saying.

I agree that the context and speaker do matter, they are undeniable factors but they aren’t the entirety of an idea. I think you’ll agree that something doesn’t become true just because a certain person says it and false if a different person says the same thing. The idea remains the same.
