Great! I’m on old marching band member all through high school. When I went to the U of IL, women weren’t allowed in the marching band, so I volunteered as “secretary” and managed their music and marching patterns during my years there. Served as an usher on the floor of the Memorial Stadium, so got to enjoy our work from right on the spot! Soon after I graduated, women were made a part of the marching band. Shucks! Just missed it!

My high school was very small (about 300 students all told), so our band teacher had to coerce/bribe/whatever a bunch of students to just carry instruments and pretend to play them so we’d manage to have more than a dozen marchers on the field.

Actually, great fun was had by all and some of us actually managed to learn how to passably play an instrument.
