Thanks for posting this—the whole thread is enlightening. I chatted it to a friend of mine who writes science fiction and she was all “holy crap.” I then learned from her that Novik is another person who got started writing fanfic (nothing wrong with that, don’t get me wrong, but OMGWTFBBQ the stuff that has come out of fanfic, sorry!). She had an established fanfic base when she got a publishing contract. She leveraged her fanfic base as a “guerrilla marketing” team to get publicity for her books. I mean, this is late-stage capitalism but yeah, ugh.
