We’ve been filming Tiny Desk concerts for more than 10 years. While revisiting our archives, we discovered that some of our earliest concerts never made it to YouTube!

You hear a lot about young prodigies in jazz. That’s understandable: Jazz prizes skill, and any teenager who can tear it up like the big boys and girls is usually worth a smile and nod. But usually, you can safely make a note to yourself to check in about that kid in, say, 10 years. It’s one thing to emulate the masters’ technique. It’s another to develop an original style, the way your heroes did.

Guitarist Julian Lage, 23, was once called a prodigy. He was a cute kid, true. But lately, he’s also been playing in bands of master musicians — among them Gary Burton, Eric Harland and Mark O’Connor. There’s also the matter of Lage’s distinct sound. He plays an electric guitar, which sounds almost like an acoustic, and he tends toward folky, pastoral lines, but with a bite. When Lage released his debut album two years ago, even hardened jazz cynics took notice: He had ideas, too.

When Lage recently came for a one-nighter in Washington, D.C., he brought only bassist Jorge Roeder and percussionist Tupac Mantilla. (His usual quintet is a bit unusual, adding a saxophonist and a cellist.) Collectively, the three are soft-spoken and friendly, and they’re stellar musicians, too. At the NPR Music offices, they treated us to songs that haven’t yet been commercially recorded — the opening tune “Welcoming Committee” and the closing untitled number, harvested from a little online experiment wherein Lage challenged himself to write a song a day for 30 days. (“The first 23 suuucked,” he joked.) In between, there’s the gentle whisk and country-road twang of “However,” which appears on the Julian Lage Group’s 2011 sophomore album, Gladwell.

The three looked intently at each other throughout this Tiny Desk Concert, with the sort of push-and-pull group interaction that brought a near-constant smile to each of their faces. There was plenty of concentration wrapped up in that, of course; before we started rolling tape, the three grabbed each other’s hands in a circle for a brief moment of meditative clarity. But then they had some fun.

US House forecast from 270towin.com shows a loss of two seats by the Democrats and one seat by the Libertarians (Amash isn’t running), all to the Republicans (leaving the House in the Democrats’ hands). The chart at the bottom shows what they believe are the most competitive House races.

For the US Senate from 270towin.com they predict a gain of two seats from 47 to 49 (not counting independents Bernie Sanders and Angus King). They show four toss-ups: MT, IA, NC, GA-special.

One thing that needs to be done is to restore auditors’ jobs at the IRS after the GOP has been gutting them ever since Reagan.

Are you worried that there could be a major insurrection against the US government?

Yes.

My fear is that there will be violence if the election is contested, or if it looks like Trump’s losing. I worry that there will be efforts at intimidating election officials and voters.

I’ve always been concerned about the one-off person, the lone wolf who takes these ideas to the max. I am much more concerned now about organized efforts to subvert elections, democratic power, courts.

Part of me (the no-fucks-left part) is inclined to say that it would be fair for Trump to confiscate all of their income and keep them alive on a ration of gruel and turnips if they are dumb enough to keep voting for him.
The rest of me realizes that this would put all, or most, of us on gruel and turnips, or close to it, and is therefore not fair.

Five-day tropical outlook for the Atlantic.

nhc.noaa.gov

Aside from the likely tropical storm to form in the central Atlantic, chances are increasing for the western Caribbean Sea.

For the North Atlantic…Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:

1. Showers and thunderstorm activity associated with a non-tropical
low pressure system located about 600 miles southeast of Bermuda is
poorly organized and displaced well east of the low-level center.
Environmental conditions remain conducive for development, and a
subtropical depression or storm is very likely to form during the
next day or so while the low meanders well to the southeast of
Bermuda.
* Formation chance through 48 hours…high…80 percent.
* Formation chance through 5 days…high…90 percent.

2. A broad area of low pressure is likely to form in a couple of days
over the southwestern Caribbean Sea. Some gradual development of
this system is possible late this week as it moves slowly
northwestward or north-northwestward over the western Caribbean Sea.
* Formation chance through 48 hours…low…near 0 percent.
* Formation chance through 5 days…low…20 percent.

ok, just go read the internets. But only the good parts.

Jennifer Rubin has a better piece than Jill Lapore’s:

Trump’s enablers can’t escape the consequences of their choices
washingtonpost.com

There are practical reasons for employers outside the right-wing bubble to reject not only those who were the face of the administration but also those who labored behind the scenes.

First, members of this administration probably acquired bad habits (ignoring gross misconduct, lying for their boss, etc.), practiced a great deal of willful ignorance and rationalized unethical conduct. The administration, aside from its corruption and moral rot, was also grossly incompetent in its day-to-day operations. Staffers coming out of Trump’s orbit would likely have to unlearn misconceptions about how functional workplaces operate.

Second, those seen as ethically obtuse and tolerant of racism pose a business risk. Clients and customers might not want to be associated with a firm that features someone who just months ago promoted their boss’s ludicrous lies or remained silent as he winked at QAnon conspiracy theories. Alumni of the Trump administration do not suffer from a political association but rather from their willingness to enable someone who betrayed his country’s highest ideals.

In other words, these ex-Trump figures do not bring desirable skills or valuable experience; they come more as a potential liability.

(there’s more)

She had an established fanfic base when she got a publishing contract. She leveraged her fanfic base as a “guerrilla marketing” team to get publicity for her books. What’s weird is that her ten book Temeraire series (that I’ve read all of) was quite good and didn’t seem to be tied down with any of this sort of weird tone deaf baggage.

Not sure if it was because it was set in alternate Napoleonic times, or because the main character was expressly British and given the time period it made a lot more sense for there to be gaps in his knowledge of the culture of people/places he was dealing with, but for whatever reason this doesn’t strike me as like Harry Potter where you can trace a line from the from some noticeably tone deaf aspects of the author’s previous works to how they’ve developed into even more unpleasant stuff later on…

Japan is to release treated radioactive water from the destroyed Fukushima nuclear plant into the sea, media reports say.

It follows years of debate over how to dispose of the liquid, which includes water used to cool the power station hit by a massive tsunami in 2011.

Environmental and fishing groups oppose the idea but many scientists say the risk it would pose is low.

Yeah, nothing clears up the discussion of when life begins like a poll. JHC.

A guy on the transplant list desperate for a kidney is definitely a life, he’s a person, he’s got all the inherent rights of a person.

Those rights do not include the right to MY kidney.

or bone marrow. or even a goddam pint of blood. His right to life does not include rights to my parts.

If I want to be selfish about it, people might dislike me for it. They might shake their heads at me, never invite me into their homes again. Depending on who the ailing person is, someone might even punch me in the face and yell at me.

But the law is very, very clear that it’s up to me. I have the right to be as selfish as I wanna be.

I thought my 2.5 day bar exam was hellish (I had food poisoning on day 2 and 3) but wow, this makes mine look like a walk in the park.

One test-taker, who asked to remain anonymous for reasons that will quickly become apparent, said she spent the break between sessions mopping pee off her floor.

“I can’t believe there is video of me pissing myself on camera just so I have the right to take this stupid exam,” she said.

*snip*

A test-taker in Illinois was denied an accommodation for bathroom breaks despite being 38 weeks pregnant, and wound up giving birth in the middle of the exam. She had to finish the test from her hospital bed. (In an email to The Daily Beast, ExamSoft held this up as a success story, writing that this “would not have been possible without a remote Bar exam.”)

Obviously, the accommodations for those who needed them were either non-existent or pretty awful (have to do it in person and risk your health/life).

i go a step further

the issue is when, in the seamless progression from long before fertilization to birth, it ‘becomes’ a single, discrete human life with constitutional rights and protections.

but in truth, the anti’s are not trying to define when it has human rights or even constitutionally protected rights.

if they were, then we could have reasoned and legal arguments over what happens when individual rights conflict. this is the real issue - whose rights prevail in any particular situation - the pregnant person or the entity being carried. We actually have those arguments all the time: your fist/my nose. my pig farm/your residential neighborhood.

but no. this is not where they’re headed and they do not want to wind up there.

they want to instill in the blastocyst/zygote/embryo/fetus the superior power to always compel another actually existing and born human into subjugation to it, and to have that power enforced by the state.

What did Charlie Kirk do this time?

Charlie Jerk lied about absentee Trump ballots being rejected in Pennsylvania.
What really happened was Pennsylvania found a high number of duplicate requests for absentee ballots.

In journalism the publisher always has final say because he, she or they are the ones funding the operation.

A good publisher will respect the decisions of their senior editor for the most part.

A bad publisher on the other hand…

Also some publishers are stupidly fucking biased and give no shits about letting that bias show in every story that gets run.

Great Skeddadle (Bolshoi Drap) is the bemused name Russians give to the panic-stricken flight of bureaucrats, party officials, and other fatcats as the German army drew close to Moscow in 1941. As it turned out, the Germans were stopped short and most of the skeddadlers slunk back over the next few months.

Great Skeddadle II, the flight of Trump stooges, accomplices and other traitors from the US as Biden’s inauguration nears, will be the opposite in some respects. Instead of fleeing from Moscow to escape fascists, these new refugees will flee to Moscow to escape anti-fascists.
I don’t know if it will really happen, but it will be glorious to see if it does. Of course, there will be disappointment as the major players escape justice (though to an uncertain future), but this will be tempered by the abject misery of the small-fry who are left behind. There are a lot more of these, after all, and it was they who faithfully enabled and abetted the Trump Horror from beginning to end. Seeing them frog-marched out of mcmansions and tacky office complexes from coast to coast should become a major spectator sport.
