And I think that’s why they oppose immigration reform. They know that their actions have made Hispanics likely to be strong Democrats and they don’t want to deal with the consequences of that. They’re just trying to hold on for life at the moment. Now, what they could do and won’t do because they’re dicks is try to become less condescending to communities that aren’t wealthy white conservative Christians.

The GOP leadership seems to be of two minds; on the one hand, they want immigration reform so they can use it to pander to Hispanic voters. On the other hand, they’re afraid of it for the reasons you cited.

The base is almost universally against it, because of their fear of Hispanics voting en bloc for the Democrats, coupled with their nativist sentiments and bigotry.
