Discovery Launches!

Space shuttle Discovery and its seven astronauts are rocketing toward orbit after a brilliant nighttime liftoff from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The shuttle’s solid rocket boosters separated as planned and the three main engines are now powering the shuttle during its 8 1/2-minute climb.

Every launch brings a degree of sadness to me as we have evidently decided that these endeavors don’t rise to level of some mysterious social need. Very soon we will be buying our way aboard a Russian launch vehicle. One giant leap into mediocrity. Thanks Obama. Fulfilling your vision every day here. Makes me proud to be a citizen of the world.
