Just a quick drive-by comment: I don’t much care for Al Sharpton’s tactics, but having lived in NYC & the NYC area for over a decade now, I’m used to seeing & hearing him.

He may be a self promoter, but he gets heard. For poor, minority, or otherwise disadvantaged people who are being railroaded or who have a serious problem that’s being ignored by the powers that be, he’s a godsend. The squeaky wheel gets the grease and all that. He’s effective—that’s a fact, regardless of how you feel about him.

I think the problem with Reverend Al, and those like him, is that he’s willing to railroad people from other ethnic backgrounds unjustly to carry out his perception of “justice”.
