It was torture when we convicted the Japanese of it. The only thing that’s changed is that you want to pretend it isn’t torture when the US does it.

Seriously, though, there are different levels of coercion, and the methods reportedly used by the US are certainly less barbaric than were used by the Japanese.
And the bottom line may be that a certain amount of coercion is a necessary evil which Obama and any POTUS must tolerate in special circumstaces in order to enhance military intelligence.
