Red and Blue are arbitrary. The common American party distinction comes from TV graphics. In Europe, red tends to stand for Socialist/Communist parties while blue is more common with the Tory or other conservative parties.

Just like “left” and “right” are arbitrary designations based on the seating arrangement of the French Parliament, instituted to keep loyalist and opposition delegates from assaulting each other…
