Yeah, after the 20 July plot, Hitler basically let Himmler and the SS loose to track down, arrest, torture, and execute anyone even remotely connected to the plot. One of the few that got to go out with any dignity was Rommel, whose branding as a traitor would throw the Wehrmacht into turmoil. He gave him two choices: commit suicide via cyanide and be buried a hero or be tried before the Volksgerichtshof, which would have meant the arrest and possible execution of his own family. He chose suicide and got buried with honors.
