After his wife and mother died the same day in NYC, Teddy Roosevelt left NYC to operate a ranch in North Dakota. He busted out as a rancher, and returned to NYC. During his time living in the West, he saw the Yellowstone area, IIRC. He was an ardent conservationist, as opposed to environmentalist.

In Edmund Morris’s book, on TR, the first one I believe, there’s a list of animals Roosevelt killed on a hunting trip in the states. It’s hilarious. The list keeps going and going. Sounds like something John Cleese would read in a Python routine.
