The choice between conflict or ethical oil is not a red herring at all. It is not a choice that is made in reference to the environment. There are other issues that are relevant as well. So while it has no bearing on the environmental issues, it has grave consequences outside of the environmental bubble.
I think you’re giving the consequences inappropriate weightings. Aside from the use by the right of the ‘ethical’ oil meme as an argument against the left, the consequence of financing potentially dangerous regimes, while important in the short run, pales when compared to the problems we will face because of the unrestricted use of fossil fuels.
