The answer to that is training. And even if the shooter focuses on you, that give you a better chance to drop him. And should worse come to worse, even if you die it still gives others a chance to escape.

An honorable man carries arms to defend himself and others, not to kill. Killing the aggressor may happen, but that isn’t the goal.

Get some statistics and do a tailored risk assessment. You are more likely to be killed by a bumblebee than an “active shooter”. Inducing that kind of fear, driving suspicion into every human encounter, is the real corrosion of our civilization.
