Here’s the latest news on the final moments of the standoff between federal authorities and the Bundy Gang of armed domestic terrorists in Oregon: Oregon standoff spokesman Robert ‘LaVoy’ Finicum killed, Bundys in custody after gunfight near Burns.

BURNS – Oregon standoff spokesman Robert “LaVoy” Finicum was killed and other top leaders of the wildlife refuge occupation were arrested Tuesday after law enforcement officials stopped vehicles about 20 miles north of Burns.

[…]

Ryan Bundy, 43, of Bunkerville, Nev., suffered a minor gunshot wound in the confrontation at 4:30 p.m. along U.S. 395. He was treated and released from a local hospital and was in FBI custody, authorities said.

Also arrested were his brother, Ammon Bundy, 40, of Emmett, Idaho, Ryan W. Payne, 32, of Anaconda, Mont., Brian Cavalier, 44, of Bunkerville, Nevada, and Shawna J. Cox, 59, of Kanab, Utah. They were charged with conspiracy to impede federal officers, a felony.

[…]

Several hours later, Jon Ritzheimer, 32, a key militant leader, surrendered to police in Arizona on the conspiracy charge. He gained national fame for complaining on a video about the delivery of sex toys to the refuge in response to the occupiers’ plea for supplies.

Police also arrested Pete Santilli, 50, of Cincinnati, an independent broadcaster known for his aggressive manner and live streaming refuge events, in Burns. He also faces a conspiracy charge to impede federal officers.

Asked if he would rather be killed than be arrested — were the occupation to turn violent — 54-year-old occupier LaVoy Finicum, said: “Absolutely … I have no intention of spending any of my days in a concrete box.”

You might want to hold off on the “finished” sub-title. The situation in Malheur is ongoing. I mean, I really hope it falls apart…peacefully! But there’s still armed people there.

Santilli sounds genuinely horrified that Blaine is refusing to come out. He was there helping stoke this shit and now he doesn’t like the crop he sowed.

As I alluded to the other day, I was getting worried that these idiots were going to start grabbing local officials who they ‘indicated’ with their idiotic people’s court.

And as many people here have pointed out, if African-American people had tried this shit, they would have been shot to pieces in less than 24 hours. The fact these guys got away with this crap for nearly a month is the walking definition of white privilege.

It’s ludicrous that these yahoo cosplayers had control over a federal wildlife refuge for 24 days. The power should have been cut and the occupied buildings surrounded on 3 January.

The treasonous assholes behind this, if their skin color had been any shade darker we’d be talking about far more dead people right now.

Fortunately the feds seemed to have executed a well-planned operation to get these guys in handcuffs.

African Americans did try it back in 1979 at the Savannah Wildlife Refuge…on land that they actually had owned from just after the Civil War and was taken by eminent domain (for far less then market value) during WW2 and then turned into a Refuge.

They were unarmed and camped in tents for all of three days before they were all arrested and went to prison.

This is part of what I was worrying about earlier.

These guys talk like they’re cohesive unit, but they’re not. They think they’re soldiers, but they don’t have basic discipline, chain of command, or even a operation plan. All the posturing and mythologizing makes it worse, since nobody knows how serious any one person is, and everybody’s using the same bluster…and they’re also stoking one another with paranoia and martyr porn.

If one idiot really commits, he can make everything worse.

The call to other loons in the Operation Mutual Defense network is important. If they don’t show, the damage wil rebound through the patriot movement. Ryan Payne, one of the arrested, founded it and is on the board. (Name has changed in some retellings.)

It can all come apart really, really fast. I would worry that they’ll start fighting amongst themselves, some dipshit willhave his finger inside the trigger guard, and next thing you know everyone’s pumping out full clips in all directions.

At that point, the FBI should just stand off and wait for them to run out of ammunition. Equally likely is that they will buy all the way into the martyrdom myth and want to go out in a “blaze of glory.”

Obama is absolutely qualified for the job, but in this day and age, I can’t imagine that the Senate would go along with it. It’s been a very long time since a straight up politician was appointed to the Court, the last true politician appointed was Warren. And only once has a former president been appointed, and that was Taft in 1921, eight years after he left office. And in a time when the nature of the federal government (not to mention the law generally) was very different.

There’s a question of whether he’d have to recuse himself on any case involving legislation he signed.

It’s a nice idea, but I say we let the man enjoy retirement - let him sit on boards of directors and give speeches for many, many thousands of dollars.

I am out of my fucking brain that they brought in noncombatants, though. It’s so…horrific and stupid and presumptuous.

In overseas conflicts, we revile groups that even appear to use human shields, or play the “there’s civilians, you can’t attack, nyah, nyah” game. And generally those things occur in a conflict zone that’s occupied.

These bastards imported noncombatants.

I brought up race earlier in the thread. I think I was addressing white privilege more than anything.

As for the highlighted phrase, these seditious malcontents were treated like white people, given plenty of space and the benefit of the doubt for over three weeks. Based on 18th Airborne Corps + LRS + MI BN, Payne was (much) more likely than not in a LRS unit attached to the 525th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade. The Army in the past few years has generally NOT sent their best and brightest infantry people to sit with Intel units. They usually send their almost washouts, and his not being Ranger or Sniper qualified attests to that. His not making it past E-5, and wanting to be a CIA case officer under non-official cover (as in, the movie ‘The Recruit’) means that he has *just* enough training to impress someone who was never around the infantry (which is why he lied about being a Ranger knowing full well any legit skepticism merits a check of the rolls), and absolutely no sense. He’s far more pathetic than crazy, and far more crazy than dangerous.

In essence, if HE was their heavy hitter, then sound cannons and bean bag guns on day one would have been the best solution. Or pretty girls bringing alcohol and asking to hold the guns.

re: #85 retired cynic

But I would say it factors in.

I think the comparison here is Black Lives Matter. If shit happened near a BLM event—which, remember tend to be poor neighborhoods with high crime—it was their fault. Fuck, there was talk of the “Ferguson effect”….wholly fictive, mind you..so BLM was responsible for dead police anywhere.

Both at Bundy Ranch and Malheur, there was shit going on that should have thrown GIANT red flags for the press and the pundits. Not the guns themselves, but the paradoxical rhetoric of “we are armed and ready to shoot but we’re peaceful but also this is a fight and we’ll die to win.” Basically, when the white people did some crazy stuff with firearms and threats…and stealing shit…a big chunk of society treated their grievances as valid, and their behavior as extreme-but-noteworthy.

ETA: Another thing glossed over about all this sovereign stuff re/ Bundy Ranch. Their actual, stated belief is that tons of people are “guilty” of collaboration with the fake, fringe-flagged government, and deserve penalties ranged from confiscation of property to death. So “We are peaceful” is contingent on “we don’t have the power to enact the stuff we really believe.”

How Malheur is being talked about is colored by Bundy Ranch…but look at what’s being dropped out of Bundy Ranch: (1) Cliven Bundy dropped a giant racist fart, and basically made my point about “white people have real concerns, blacks just want stuff” subtext into text. (2) I shit you not, I will keep repeating it. Two motherfuckers actually went out and shot some cops and other people, who totally were on board with Bundy Ranch stuff, stayed at the ranch, and agreed with all assembled about their crazy shit.

To summarize: BLM can kill cops states away via spooky action at a distance (pardon the play on the old-school epithet, but I’m being shocking on purpose); sovereign fuckwits can actually cap people in a fucking Walmart on the way home from a fucking jamboree of people that bond over how flag flair means there’s no real law, and it goes down the memory hole.

re: #59 KGxvi

This is the media wanting to get the GOP voters to the polls - otherwise “the black guy will be on the Supreme Court”. He doesn’t want it and no-one (at least for the next dozen years) would offer it.

This will all be covered in an summertime Atlantic Monthly article, but I’d love to know what the FBI is doing near the refuge right now. Roadblocks? Getting into positions? Absolutely nothing? The Refugistas must be crawling out of their skins looking for movement. I feel bad for any small animals out feeding tonight, their chance of being shot by a jumpy Al-Cracker teahadi has gone up 1,000%.

This is a hell of an opportunity for intel. The situation is the world’s biggest honeypot for Domestic Terrorists. I bet the NSA back doors are choked with keyword flags… There’s probably a dozen geeks in an office in Quantico on third shift banging down Mountain Dews and tracking Facebook posts like mad… The name-and-handle flowcharts probably look like the global phylogenetic tree by this point.

I hope the feds are watching the roads, and watching their backs. The loons and stalkers already in town are planning something, surely.

I wonder if they’re all lead poisoned? No joke.

I read an article a few years ago about a gun range in Washington State that had a berm for a backstop for bullets. Over the years, so much lead built up, and turned to dust that the place was an absolute hazard. For just about everyone involved: the employees, customers, renovation contractors and even people at the nearby bus stop!

If I recall, the locals were very slow to inspect. Is this being repeated at gun ranges all over? No wonder Ted Nugent is pickled.

I am a trial to him. Sushi is only tolerable if I would otherwise starve to death. Fortunately (for some degree of fortunately), after his time in Japan most sushi available in America does not meet his standards so this rarely becomes an issue.

Which reminds me, I have to make reservations at the good Japanese place around here for his birthday. I volunteered to be in charge of the reservation making a present, because I hate phones.

Barack Obama: Why we must rethink solitary confinement By Barack Obama January 25

Barack Obama is president of the United States.

In 2010, a 16-year-old named Kalief Browder from the Bronx was accused of stealing a backpack. He was sent to Rikers Island to await trial, where he reportedly endured unspeakable violence at the hands of inmates and guards — and spent nearly two years in solitary confinement.

In 2013, Kalief was released, having never stood trial. He completed a successful semester at Bronx Community College. But life was a constant struggle to recover from the trauma of being locked up alone for 23 hours a day. One Saturday, he committed suicide at home. He was just 22 years old.

Solitary confinement gained popularity in the United States in the early 1800s, and the rationale for its use has varied over time. Today, it’s increasingly overused on people such as Kalief, [snip]

re: #262 goddamnedfrank

Whipped up a quick transcript for those who aren’t inclined to watch the video.

Alright everyone this ain’t a normal video but this ain’t a normal situation either.

Talking to Mark McConnell earlier, alright, he was Ammon’s personal security also along with Buddha. What happened was we had Mark, we had Ammon, we had Buddha, in the lead vehicle. They was pulled over. It ended up being a warrant / for a warrant. They went to take them into custody.

The second vehicle which consisted of Lavoy, Ryan Paine, Ryan Bundy and Shawna, which I do not know. They went around them they ended up running into a blockade about a mile down from where Ammon, Mark, and Buddha was stopped. There happened to be some arguments between the guys in the truck, somehow they got Ryan Paine pulled out of the truck apparently. Lavoy took off, he ended up hitting the snowbank, I guess trying to get around the blockade. After he hit that snowbank he came out of that truck and he charged at the law enforcement as I understand it. This is information that I’ve gotten from Mark. Mark was taken into custody. He was not a part of the official takeover of the refuge, so therefore they released him they did hold his guns they did hold his Jeep.

Alright. Mark has done a video, and that will be coming through the Oathkeepers and coming out to everybody. This right here is just a way to slow you all down, calm you down and THINK. Wait for the information to come out people.

And another thing we’ve been trying to negotiate with the refuge as far as blaming them. They’re no longer answering the phone. They have until 4 o’clock their time, to leave that refuge, go northbound and leave that main entrance going into that refuge. Alright, plain and simple.

You know, there will be a follow up video about all of this once everything cools down. Right now everybody needs to calm down. A lot of information is hitting social media and it’s wrong information. Y’all need to wait until we get the video from mark and get eyewitnesses that was there.

I love: how the speaking engagement was set up, even luring the singing kids out. How the stop was executed. Setting the minons free after, I’m sure, some very intense conversations to go back and try to talk some sense and facts into the others.

I can’t wait to read the behind-the-scenes book.

No. It’s much more similar to a cargo-cult.

(Most) Larpers have a reasonable grip on reality, and know that they’re just playing a game.

These a-holes really believe that if they make up their own legal arguments that sound clever enough (to them) then it’s the same as real law, that has been made by other people.

The thing that makes this be an important difference is that it’s not possible to explain to cargo-culters that just copying the surface level details of a system doesn’t actually duplicate the system. They just aren’t capable of perceiving reality….and you have to realise that rational arguments won’t change their minds.

He also had written a cowboy thriller about the chaos of the American West after an electromagnetic pulse collapses the country’s infrastructure called “Only By Blood and Suffering.” The novel traced a family as each grown child navigated the new world and fights back against the overreach of the federal government.

re: #410 darthstar

Quick note about the Jersey Shore flooding: much of the South Jersey shore sits on a series of barrier islands, similar to NC’s Outer Banks. Sometimes it the back bays that flood the towns, not the ocean.

I need to look this up further, but I have anecdotal evidence from a relative that this may have happened in the town they live in. The tides themselves were much higher than usual as well, due to storm surge.

This is an important distinction, as Chrisite’s desire to use eminent domain to seize beachfront property for sea walls wouldn’t stop any bay flooding.

He should effing know this, as governor. Between this and the mop comment, this should set off a multitude of red flags with Republican voters (and the members of the Boston Globe editorial board). If this is how Christie treats his current constituents, imagine how he would handle a Katrina-esque disaster.

Christ, he’d spend half his time yelling at people for living there in the first place, and the other half mocking the people who drowned.

You people have no idea how much I loathe this guy as governor, and how pissed off I am that people re-elected him in a landslide the second time around. It’s like, you saw what he was like the first time. What’d you expect?

I’m thinking the climate is different now from the early 90s. Back then, the mediocrity that is our elite cable media poorly reported on both Ruby Ridge and Waco, and the nutters were communicating with each other and receiving no pushback from society.

This time, they’re receiving a lot of red hot scorn and mockery - which will dampen the likelihood of a lot of joiners among those who are nutter-curious. I’m thinking that the aftermath of Ruby Ridge and Waco would have been a lot different with Twitter and Facebook.

Not for nothin’, but it’s still early. Until every one of those nutbags is either under arrest or sent packing and the refuge is declared back under state control, I’m not ruling out the possibility of further bloodshed.

And if anyone else is killed (God forbid), they should charge the Bundy boys as accessories to murder at the very least.

Really? If people had guns out because they thought there might be an active shooter, how many would have been wounded by responding police? Hell, how many would have ended up shooting each other because one thought the other was the active shooter? Even assuming that didn’t happen, the police would have to detainee, question, and investigate every person with a gun.

I don’t think carry a gun solves all problems, but I do think one has a better chance of surviving an active shooter if one is armed after the shooter first attacks (those attacked first seldom have time to react, and those rare exceptions being because they are trained to spot such threats and alert). After that first attack, the odds of survival go up if you can shoot back.

The answer to that is training. And even if the shooter focuses on you, that give you a better chance to drop him. And should worse come to worse, even if you die it still gives others a chance to escape.

An honorable man carries arms to defend himself and others, not to kill. Killing the aggressor may happen, but that isn’t the goal.

Again you should watch that simulation they did. Maybe it would put away some of your misconceptions about people in these situations. You’re a military history buff so surely you know about how entire platoons and squads have been been captured armed by one man before. It’s all about the element of surprise. And as for training, the ABC video proves that no matter how much training you have, a real life situation is totally different. And many of these guys aren’t carrying to defend themselves and others, they think they’re badasses who will just blow away abstract bad guys and be the hero, it’s a dangerous mindset that can and will cause an already volatile situation to be even worse.

I understand what your’e saying, but to be honest, it falls under the “Good guy with a gun” fallacy. Most people do not take the rigorous training that is required to make that kind of life and death decision in a situation like that. None.

I also question your statistics there. I’d be curious to see if there’s any non-NRA type research to back that up.

Shit, I’d be willing to bet many cops don’t keep up their firearm training like they should. Far, far too many people in the US strap on a weapon thinking it’s a magic talisman that instantly transforms them into the Punisher; dispatching only the bad guys who truly deserve to die.

And let’s face it: we are the only industrialized Western country that worships weapons like this. It’s a unique disease to this nation that is simultansously embarrassing and frightening.

I get that there will be exceptions to this concept, like every other situation. However, we live in the frigging 21st Century. Americans’ childish fascination with playing cowboy in an era where we carry Star Trek communicators in our pockets is beyond delusional.

474
HappyWarrior  Jan 27, 2016 • 7:26:47am

Shit let’s consider this as well. Shooter gets you and your gun. Well he’s got another gun with more ammo now. Now usually these mass murderers do bring plenty of ammo along (sounds like a good argument for ammo control to me but I digress). I really don’t care how much training one has. You, especially if you’re a civilian aren’t going to be prepared for a situation like a mass shooter. You know why? Because we’re not conditioned to be that way and frankly nor should we. I shouldn’t have to go out to the grocery store, class, etc and fear today may be my last day since some asshole decides to bring out a gun. So yeah I think TImothy’s “attack” was perfectly warranted, these people may have good intentions but often than not, they make already chaotic situations worse.

Exactly. So many of them buy the gun and do the bare minimum as required by law. And DF if you’re serious about requiring training, let’s talk to the NRA about that because they throw a shit fit every time things like that are suggested. Indeed, that fear is how that young woman who was in a car crash got killed by a man whose home she went to for help. Honestly, I don’t want to live in a paranoid society like this where I have to be worried if I look at someone wrong or say something wrong to someone, I get shot. Take for another example the retired police lieutenant (an actual trained guy no less) who shot and killed a man for throwing popcorn at him.

Correction for accuracy. Few would argue simply being armed makes one honorable and the honor relates to the motives behind arming oneself, not to the arms themselves.

re: #463 Dark_Falcon

The problem with your position isn’t the tactical stuff. Sure if you have an armed presence after the initial attack by the gunperson/s (Damn I’m inclusive) and a scenario similar to say Virginia Tech etc than you will probably in a least some cases have fewer dead than otherwise. When you step back though and consider the increased number of negligent shootings that come from carrying (and yes I can imagine a gun culture where this occurs much less often but we aren’t going to have that gun culture as long as we have this macho and irresponsible aura around guns which is too common currently), the number of incidents that may escalate from a moment of cursing someone out to an unintended murder(as in a fleeting feeling that would have gone nowhere and harmed no one except for the presence of firearms), the fact that the ubiquity of guns makes it easier to engage in mass shootings and odds are many more lives will be ruined and ended by a mix of easy access to firearms than will ever saved by being armed prior to a mass shooting combined with the almost mythic status they seem to hold in many parts of our society.

This ended up getting a little out of hand. There are other things that come into play that have been mentioned such as even with training and preparation that most people won’t do well in their first firefight (it takes several engagements before even trained elements really become proficient in general) and even experienced people will not usually do well if they aren’t expecting the possibility. And if you respond that people can be in that mindset well I’ve spent years living in that heightened state if awareness always have a plan to kill or be killed and let me tell you it’s toxic has taken years to unlearn that and even begin to approach a more relaxed way of being. I would not recommend it.

Well, much as I may admire the iconic 7L engines of the Muscle Car Era, nowadays you can get the same performance out of a naturally aspirated engine half the size, getting 3x the gas mileage, and easily passing all the emissions standards. Technology has advanced that far. Indeed, on a Challenger forum, some guy said he was thinking of scrapping the fuel injection system on his for a 4-barrel carb, and everyone said, “Why? Not to mention it’s not like real SEAL’s are invincible. They can die as stupidly and pointlessly as anyone else. And while I will grant that anyone that completes the training is likely to be pretty physically capable that doesn’t necessarily translate to being the sort of planner that would make a difference (and while it’s a bit unfair anyone that managed to put themselves in this situation is almost by definition failing that). There is a lot of mythology around them, Navy does a fine job of encouraging this, and while they generally are a very dangerous collection of men at the end of the day they are just that men. This guy will be disappointed if he ever realizes that Batman and Superman they aren’t.

I don’t. I think the ‘worst case scenario’ has a uncomfortably high probability.

If there’s one thing that the right wing has taught us in the past 10 years or so, it’s that they are in a race with themselves to see who can reach bottom the fastest. It took only 8 years of having an African-American president for them to make an open racist their presidential front runner. The entire right wing seems to be on a rocket sled to the bottom without any brakes.

Worst case scenario is what the far-right wing does best.

I think you are overestimating how many of these internet warriors are actually willing to risk their lives.

I did not put a number on the ones who will act out, but I don’t think it would be anywhere close to a hundred. A few dozen could do a lot of damage, especially with the hordes of armchair fantasists to cheer them on. I think it’s a little extreme to suggest that there are none at all out of millions of candidates. We did have McVeigh and his accomplices back when there were far fewer militant kooks and, more importantly, less opportunity for incitement.
We shall see.

re: #454 Dark_Falcon

I don’t think carry a gun solves all problems, but I do think one has a better chance of surviving an active shooter if one is armed after the shooter first attacks (those attacked first seldom have time to react, and those rare exceptions being because they are trained to spot such threats and alert). After that first attack, the odds of survival go up if you can shoot back.

I’m thinking of Robert A. Heinlein’s Tunnel In The Sky.

In it the main character is about to take a survival test on another planet. He asks his sister, a soldier, what gun he should take.

She tells him to instead take two knives. In a survival situation a gun will make a person think they can fight about anything. With only knives a person knows they are weak and vulnerable and will not take any chances, especially not stupid ones.

It’s advice I personally have taken to heart.

The Feds just captured key leaders and basically locked that place down. They might go into the refuge now, but may take some time to let the cretins calm down a bit: going in right now while they’re hopped up on glory and fear might cause an epic battle.

Now that they’ve locked down and taken control it might be good to let the rest of the Secdee Patriots simmer on the situation. Let the negotiators start doing their thing.

Are the occupying freedom fighters still in the refuge?

Well, much as I may admire the iconic 7L engines of the Muscle Car Era, nowadays you can get the same performance out of a naturally aspirated engine half the size, getting 3x the gas mileage, and easily passing all the emissions standards. Technology has advanced that far. Indeed, on a Challenger forum, some guy said he was thinking of scrapping the fuel injection system on his for a 4-barrel carb, and everyone said, “Why? Are you nuts?”

Hubby told me this morning that they just got over 300 hp out of a 2 liter engine. I was awed.

What’s really upsetting about the Vanilla ISIS standoff is the potential for even greater loss of life.

Don’t get me wrong; I absolutely despise these morons. They’re stupid. They live in a fantasy world that was most likely triggered when a black man was legally and honestly elected President. They’re spoiled man-children who think being an American is being able to take what you want, when you want, and fuck everyone else. Their idea of military training is playing Call of Duty. They think Red Dawn is a documentary.

But it just doesn’t have to be this way. These people are willing to kill and be killed for an America that is a figment of their imaginations. These are not principles; these are delusions. I just don’t understand how grown adults raising children can get to this point in their lives, that they’re willing to destroy their families’ well-being and security for decades of this idiocy.

Plus, the last time we had to deal with this stuff as a nation, we got a conservative terrorist bombing that in a major city that wiped out a day care full of children, in addition to the other victims.

I hope all the people on this board who still vote Republican take a long hard look at themselves and who they support. Because here we are, kids. This is what you get when the people who you helped elect go on Fox News for 8 straight years and scream that “your” country has been taken from you.

How many counties in the US do not have a healthy population of sovereign citizens or tacticool, Red Dawn-weaned nutters who hate Obama, liberals, and the direction U.S. history is moving in?

In my experience, most of America’s 3100+ counties have, especially the rural ones. But let’s be generous and say only 25% of counties have a single person who fits that description and completely hates what they think America has become. Let’s be generous again and say that of those people, only 10% are angry or unhinged enough to act out.

That would still be more than 75 people.

These numbnuts are finally arrested, and you’ve got a bunch of right wing extremists claiming that they got their martyr cookies because the feds shot them down. Except that there’s no evidence that the FBI shot without provocation. These guys are domestic terrorists, many of whom have claimed that they would not be taken alive.

One of them got their wish. They decided suicide by cop was preferable to spending a long time occupying another federal facility - one where every meal and activity was closely monitored and assessed. They deserved prison for what they did at Bundy Ranch. They engaged in conspiracy and domestic terrorism there - and again in Oregon.

These aren’t some innocent or heroic figures. Nope. They committed countless crimes, destroying federal property, vandalism, destroyed Native American relics, denied entry to a NWR - which is supposed to be open to the public, theft of government property, improper access of federal computer networks, etc., plus conspiracy to commit these crimes.

You know who else deserves a stay in Club Fed? Cliven Bundy. Because he helped initiate this whole mess with his standoff last year.

These ranchers stole from all taxpayers by refusing to pay what was already below-market grazing rights. They trespassed on federal lands with their herds, and think nothing of federal law or rights.

They only believe the nonsensical ravings of people who think that if a flag looks a certain way that it can’t be legitimate, or their misguided understanding of federal and state land use laws makes them think that the feds have no rights to lands in the West (pro tip - they do, and it’s been litigated to no end with the same outcome - that they do).

I agree completely and whole-heartedly.

But so many people don’t think through the likelihood of things like this. When the inevitable follow-up violence occurs, they’re shocked! panicked! devastated! which leads to really bad decisions (like electing Republicans who play tough on crime/terrorism). It’s the same thinking that leads to panicked over-reactions to incidents like San Bernardino that hucksters and con-men like Trump are exploiting.

That’s why I think we need to be open and upfront about the fact that there will be copycats and attempted acts of revenge, to help people realize and acknowledge the risk beforehand.

Well, they’ve got Cliven on the unlawful use of federal lands by refusing to pay grazing fees. Add to that domestic terrorism and the communications that would support conspiracy charges, and you’ve got enough to send Cliven away for the rest of his life.

Adjacent cell to Ammon and the rest of those nitwits in Club Fed. That way they can bitch about occupying more federal property (though in this case, well and entirely deserved).

There are real issues here but they end up distorted, papered over, and then the distortion is pumped up to 11. Which cause dumbfucks (and I have some sympathy for the dumbfucks we can only work with what we have) to be led into situations like this by other dumbfucks who probably score high as RWA leaders.

And then we will be accused of hypocrisy for finding this shooting (of a man who was part of a heavily armed militia which occupied federal lands and denies the legitimacy of federal law enforcement, who stated his intent to die and so on and so) to be legitimate if unfortunate because we don’t think Ramboing on scene and shooting a 12 year old or a guy on his cell phone not paying attention but holding a BB gun (in an open carry state) to be acceptable.

re: #597 Romantic Heretic

I’m thinking of Robert A. Heinlein’s Tunnel In The Sky.

In it the main character is about to take a survival test on another planet. He asks his sister, a soldier, what gun he should take.

She tells him to instead take two knives. In a survival situation a gun will make a person think they can fight about anything. With only knives a person knows they are weak and vulnerable and will not take any chances, especially not stupid ones.

It’s advice I personally have taken to heart.

One of my favorite fanfics is a Buffy/Stargate crossover; Xander explains to Sam and Teal’c that an axe is better than guns and zats and staff weapons because “you never run out of ammo and it never needs to recharge.”

To be as fair as I can possibly be and it’s not much because seriously? Conflict is like that we didn’t like IED’s and enemy snipers because they are difficult to combat particularly the language the IED’s are cowardly was used often when in fact IED’s were used because it was a reasonably effective tactic. Just like the various insurgent and terrorist groups we have been fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan would say the same about say air power and missile strikes. They are at times effective and extremely difficult for those groups to counter.

OTOH this seems more like OMG they used their brains thought ahead and didn’t do exactly what we wanted them to do! So I take back anything about fairness here cause at some point just no you suffer the consequences of forgetting that your cosplay was only supposed to be cosplay.

Helpful tip though to those who do genealogical research. You’ll see a lot of Germans with the same given first name but different middle names. The story there is that first given name is that of a popular saint i.e. Saint John or Saint Anna which is what they’d be christened with at baptism but the middle name i.e. Heinrich, Katharina, etc is what they’d go by in life. I.e. Johann Heinrich Schmidt would go by Heinrich Schmidt in his life. Honestly I am just still stunned at how far back I’ve gotten. Really holding out hope that I can get some luck with the Irish side. But I can’t really complain too much. The shortest I’ve gotten is great great grandparents on my mom’s dad’s side.

he new controversial bill in Denmark caused aiww to withdraw his exhibitions

I would not support such a bill, but as long as Denmark is taking in refugees it has the right to impose terms on them that are not humiliating or dehumanizing. I do not think that asking people to contribute to the cost of granting them shelter and asylum is necessary, but it is not extreme or inhumane.

Heh yeah sort of like how every Central Asian can call Genghis Khan Grandpa or Uncle Geng. Edward III by the way of England is a direct ancestor of many American presidents. Also, I think I heard somewhere that every President I think except Kennedy is related to William the Conqueror in some way. My cousin’s mom traced her line back that far. I’m a little bit lucky in that I have German ancestry(extensive records) but a little unlucky since I’m also Slavic and Irish in that the Slavic records could be in the native laguage of the people there, Latin, or German(language of the Austro-Hungarian empire) and Ireland unfortunately had a terrible fire that destroyed a lot of their census records in 1921 during the Irish Civil War. We’re not immune unfortunately. We lost a lot of our 1890 census records during a fire in that same era which is really unfortunate since I know my great grandmother had three siblings that died as kids but I can’t find out their name. I did contact the cemetery association but it’s a long shot since their surname is an incredibly common Irish one. Now the good news there is that means I’m probably not related to a certain Irish asshole who did propaganda for the Nazis with the name but I’m also even more not related to one of the greatest writers of the 20th century too.

Fungus Fiore claimed that Ammon’s wife told her during a phone call that Ammon had phoned from the backseat of a LE car after the arrest and told her that Finicum had been shot in cold blood. At best this is third hand from a questionable source, even ignoring the extreme unlikelihood of a suspect being allowed to use his cell phone immediately after an arrest. For that matter, a violent suspect would be handcuffed, making the claimed call all that much less likely.

The neutron star density of Mark Hemmingway is pretty hilarious to read. He’s trying to ignore that the OR militia nuts are domestic terrorists all while trying to claim that OWS/BLM were violent.

That’s some IMAX level projection there.

Compare/contrast time:

OWS/BLM - not armed, arguing against government brutality and violence against them. If persons did show up to carry out violence, they were sent packing or disavowed.

OR terrorists - heavily armed, called for other nuts to join them that were heavily armed. Demanded feds cede to their demands or else there’d be violence. Threatened multiple federal officials; threatened violence if anyone tried to effectuate arrests.

Yeah, I can see how he’s confused. He’s watching a completely different reality.

Another interesting factoid I read somewhere was that with a single exception, every US President (including Obama, via the Dunhams) has some sort of familial connection to George Washington (usually via lengthy collateral descent from the English branch, as George and Martha didn’t have any children). The only exception, for some reason, is Gerald Ford.

It must be interesting to find this stuff out - my own family tree (like, I’m sure, many Americans’) only goes back as far as Ellis Island a century or so ago - my grandparents.
Before that, pretty much a blank, as both sides of my family were immigrants from low-literacy shtetls in the backwaters of Eastern Europe, where records may or may not even exist.

Berserk militant promises ‘bloodbath’ as feds move in: ‘This is a free-for-all Armageddon

As law enforcement moved in on Wednesday to contain militants who have occupied the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge for weeks, a broadcast from inside the refuge showed angry militiamen promising a “bloodbath.”

“The media has been ordered to leave, and that means they are coming to kill us and they don’t want them to see that!” the man yelled into the camera. “They’re going to murder all of us and the media are cowards.”

“The media has been waiting for a bloodbath this whole time we’ve been here!” he exclaimed. “Now, there’s going to be one and they’re told to run? Because the feds don’t want them to know who is murdering us!”

Continuing to shout into the camera, the militia member called for the American people to join his cause: “Right now, it is on!”

Never would have guessed that Ford would be the exception. You’d be surprised honestly if you started researching it. My impression before I started the research was that the first person to emigrate to America in my family was my great great grandfather in the years leading up to the Civil War, I’ve brought him up before since he was in the Army of the Potomac but turns out I’ve got family that were here as early as Washington’s time. I’ve really had some sort of conception about a particular side of the family blown away by every bit of research I do.

What part of this does he not get? All of it.

Dammit, I’m supposed to be working. This is all a big conspiracy to prevent me from doing the client site updates I promised to finish this afternoon. Gah!

Yeah, it’s gotten in the way of my productivity too. Luckily my morning has been spent pulling media content for some clients and writing website copy for others.

He’s been carrying a slung 12 gauge.

I expect his weapon of choice would be seriously rage limited in the environment he finds himself in. Hope he doesn’t need to use it.

#oregonstandoff occupiers jumpy and nervous; David Fry confuses excavator sounds for “shots fired.” Fry somewhat volatile.

Understatement of the day.

He himself appears to have unlimited rage.

I get the impression that David Fry is the epitome of (granted, quite disturbed) a warrior a la video game. He’s a disturbed computer geek. He’s just realizing that this isn’t a game and those bullets are really real and really deadly.

Wonder what happened to Blaine Cooper. He was the one in charge last night (and scared the crap out of Santilli on the phone).

Last seen hauling ass out of the refuge, a trail of piss left in his wake.

And the other ones—from the “amageddon” link upthread—they’re issuing desperate calls for reinforcements. They seem to actually believe huge numbers of Americans are on board with overthrowing our lawfully & freely elected government. *smh*

Heard people very upset overnight because Blaine and his wife skipped out and wouldn’t answer their phones. Then an hour or so ago, someone pointed out he was posting videos on his FB from an undisclosed location. Can’t vouch for the accuracy, of course.

re: #463 Dark_Falcon

The answer to that is training. And even if the shooter focuses on you, that give you a better chance to drop him. And should worse come to worse, even if you die it still gives others a chance to escape.

An honorable man carries arms to defend himself and others, not to kill. Killing the aggressor may happen, but that isn’t the goal.

Do you think it’s 1840? You live in an imaginary retro version of reality…you’re just another conservative born a couple hundred years too late.
