Global society still had this odd fascination with dictators in the mid-20th century. Even Castro was lauded during his early years. Even by a few conservatives if I remember correctly.

Looking back, it still amazes me how folks in the 50s thought that replacing Batista with Castro would lead to a prosperous and free Cuba. But we as a country have always seemed to have a fascination with “freedom fighters”…provided they’re not opposing us.
