Captial punishment is violence done by the state, and often done in error, to innocents. It’s no better when it’s aimed at people you don’t like.

I think at the very least there will be a dishonorable discharge. That does have actual real effects. I do think that he deserves prison time as well, though I doubt it’ll do him much good; just increase his sense of martyrdom.

Or he’s just a coward who’d do anything to get out of deploying.

In this day and age I can’t discount the fact that he might be doing this purely for monetary gain. The conservative-industrial complex is one of the most lucrative business sectors to be in these days, just ask Sarah Palin. By getting himself a court martial and dishonorable discharge, he’s minted himself a book deal and speaking fees for the next 2 years, if not 6.
