The modern fundamentalist worldview has a lot in common with supernatural horror fiction. The latter in turn is really a sub-genre, an outgrowth, of the Romantic tradition in literature, however debased some recent examples may be in comparison to, say, Poe or Shelley. I wonder if fundamentalist supernaturalism is similarly a debased outgrowth of Romantic fantasy, with the trappings but none of the substance of traditional Christian theology. We can bring this process full circle, too, and examine the extent to which modern horror fiction is rooted in medieval Christian ideas of demonology and damnation.
