I must admit that I was late joining the Obama Coalition. At the time, I was still teaching and not paying much attention to the Democratic Primary. When it was announced on November 4, 2008 that Barack Obama had won, I thought I might have been living in The Twilight Zone. I’d lived under Jim Crow in the south and through the Civil Rights Era, but I had never thought America would elect a black candidate to the presidency. Obama winning caught me by surprise. What disgusted me shortly thereafter were those who began making the claim that his election meant that the U.S. was entering a “post-racial period.” I knew this was a lie, and those who embraced the belief irritated me to no end because they just didn’t/don’t understand that racism is an ingrained feature in America and is not a bug.
