I think that more recent generations of Europeans take a more dispassionate view, but you have to remember that many English cities were essentially flattened in the early stages of the war. To say nothing of the massive physical damage inflicted on Russia (boo!) and indeed Germany.

Remember to the median or average aged person these days, WWII is ancient history.
