First, look at your state laws. I don’t know where you are, but in Illinois (where I am), you have to get a FOID card from the state first, takes a month or two…. the dealer won’t let you even pick one up without showing your card.

Trying it out depends on the gun store owner and his facilities. My local guy has a small range out back, I’ve never used it myself, but I presume if I was hemming and hawing between two guns, he’d take me there to give them a test drive.
