This fits neatly with the observation that people who have never lived more than a few miles from where they grew up favored Trump by large margins.

After WWII, my Dad and Mom left Pittsburgh, where they grew up and moved to South Central Pennsylvania to find work.

Their 6 children all moved to different states to find work. Now we’re scattered all over the US from Florida to Hawaii.

This may sound heartless, but nobody is guaranteed a good job where they want to live.

It would be great to help the economies where things have been declining, but you know, one way of viewing high local unemployment/low local wages is as local overpopulation. There are too many workers for the number of available jobs, and those small factories that used to support towns all over the US are simply not coming back.

I don’t know what the solution is, but it’s not staying put, waiting for the jobs to come back.

A big problem is that rich parts of the country where people could make a lot more money have strict zoning laws which make affordable housing extremely scarce. Zoning for single family detached dwellings is segregationist and should be ended or greatly limited.
