The unofficial rumor is that he was drunk. I suppose that’s remotely possible, but I’m reasonably certain that the US bases are dry, and quite positive that alcohol is not the local choice of intoxicant. Only the Germans brought beer to dry Afghanistan.

I’m also quite certain that the US soldiers in the field will draw the appropriate conclusions from this young mans misfortune, no matter how it happened. This enemy does not take prisoners and never has. They only take hostages to be executed later on video.

The Haqqani Network is already taking a pounding because of this. If that young man doesn’t come home in one piece, there’s gonna be a lot more hell to pay in Talib country, either one.
