re: #493 MandyManners

Re-reading FCBBHO’s op-ed in the WaPost this morning, the last three paragraphs creep me out. In it, he talks about the need to shovel more money into the community colleges so that they can turn out workers for local economies.

That is important but, it somehow strikes me that he thinks such people are worker bees. What about people who attend community colleges as a way to prepare for universities or a way to cut the cost of a four-year degree by doing the first two years in a less-expensive setting?

You mean like I did? Or like my son’s doing? Screw us; we must be rich and not thinking right for taking advantage of the worker retraining programs in order to pursue our own selfish ends. Like a bachelor’s degree I can afford.

Novel thought: how about letting taxpayers hang onto their own money so they can afford to go to college or send their kids to college all by themselves? That would also increase the amount of money flowing into community colleges. It would also direct that money into programs that the students actually wanted to take.

Oh, never mind; now I see the problem with that whole idea. My bad.
