re: #490 Liberal Classic

I hate to be kind of a buzz kill, too, but even if the western world moved radically wholesale into nuclear power generation I doubt the developing world would follow suit rapidly enough to make a difference in the future climate trends. This is not to say we shouldn’t move away from combustion energy. We should. Doing so will ease the forcing function that is driving the climate out of the interglacial period thus giving us a longer time to adapt to change, and provide a stable energy source for the long term. What I am saying is I believe we are past the point of no return and I think “how do we stop it” is the wrong question. We need to be planning “how will human civilization cope.”

If we started on those sorts of projects now the tipping points get moved further back. That would give us time to go to them. The major problems, US, China, India, Europe and the practices of oil companies in the ME and Africa are the first priority.

If we go green as a nation and help others develop the technology, they go green and the oil problem begins to solve itself, because we buy most of it.
