Quite frankly I don’t understand the marriage thing at all. Really I don’t understand it. To me, marriage is religious more than legal. Legally a civil union is the same thing (or is it?)
It always struck me as being akin to wanting to eat kosher pork.
Now if there is a religion that does support gay marriage, then so be it, go do it, get a civil marriage and a religiously ordained marriage.

Lots of people do, but a civil union does not, at this time, have the same legal status.
