Byrd has repudiated his earlier racism. Do I believe he’s sincere? No. But he’s repudiated it utterly. The racism of the GOP is in the current moment. We have headlines about it all the time.

It is stupid to apply racism to any one party. Assholes are assholes regardless of one’s politics. Beyond that, it is all just posturing.
