People throw away perfectly good stuff. For example, my electric kettle, which I found not long ago - locally manufactured and in almost brand-new condition. I cleaned it up, and voila!

With things like that being plentiful and inexpensive to replace we really have become a throw away society. For a few bucks for parts for repairs and some elbow grease you can get 2, 3, 4 times the usage out of something that many would just rather toss and get a shiny new/ in the box/ never been used one. Only to toss that one away once the 1st chip is on it
