I always have a bit of a sobering moment when I drive past the park in the center of my little town and see the Hercules missile standing there. It floors me to realize that if the Cold War had turned very, very hot, this sleepy little country-bumpkin town would’ve turned into America’s last line of defense against Russian bombers with nuclear warheads.
