Conservatives liking “big government” fits right in with everything else that seems to derive from conservatism: I only care about it if it affects me directly.

Big government? Oh hell no, you’re not going to tell me I can’t park my car in my yard.

My neighbour wants to play music at 2AM? Call the sheriff.

Or: Big government: They won’t let me discriminate against that gay couple who wants to get married but conversely wanting to deny Muslims the right to have a place of worship in one’s town. They just don’t see how that they’re fine with an intrusive government when it suits their agenda. If I had to boil down my personal ideology, I’d say I want the government out of my personal life and personal decisions but I’m fine with it being used to help me and others out.
