Just recently I saw the some of the more general media have picked up on the anthropological puzzle as to why modern human brains are shrinking (this process started waaay before the iPhone, btw.) I do wonder sometimes if all our toys are just enabling us to devolve faster in some ways.

40 years ago it was possible to set yourself up with a drafting table, parallel guide, templates, lamp, and stool and open up a design business for several hundred dollars. Now, you have to spend several thousand dollars for a computer and software.

As computing advances and we see more and more super computers we’ll eventually see more traditional design positions become obsolete. Model builders are becoming obsolete with the onset of 3D printers. Rendering and 3D modeling is becoming more and more automated.

What once took years of practice on the drawing board utilizing pencil, pen and ink has become replaced with keyboard entries or routines. This of course will reduce the need for the keen process of cognitive spatial orientation.
