re: #491 ralphieboy

You see, that is a problem I have with league play over here. It is often in both teams’ interest to both get a goal each and then play out the rest of the game to a tie. I have seen matches where they all but stand on the ball to run out the clock.

naturally, England did not want to embarass themselves by playing out to a tie with the Yanks.

(And we would’ve won if the French Fleet had showed up in time…)

Wait a minute, I think you’re confusing something. That scenario of scoring a goal each and running the clock is very rarely beneficial for both teams (they must be in the group stage of a competition in which some teams are tied for the qualifying position, and the qualification is decided by the highest number of goals).

In England’s game against us they were clearly the favorite team (they have much more talented players), so we naturally adopted a more defensive strategy. We got ourselves a good result. If we get a win and a tie against Algeria and Slovenia, we’re in the knockout stage, baby!
