From Russian, I know that “yarmushka” is a yoke or a weight around one’s neck.

Russian also makes a distinction between a brother/sister-in-law who is your sibling’s spouse and one who is your spouse’s sibling.

You can never be “yarmooshed” by your own family, only by in-laws.
