I would not go so far as to call Walesa a villain, albeit he’s become a liar, a coward and a jerk (and that’s ignoring e.g. his vicious homophobia). One thing to note is that his collaboration with the SB ended in 1976, so that’s a plus. And he does deserve all the praise for what he did afterwards and until the beginning of the 1990s. But after he became president he did engage in a campaign of destruction of as many documents about his collaboration as he could find (but there were so many that it was not realistic). Cover up, crime, you know. Now, it is said by some of those in the know that his denunciations to SB also ruined many lives. As I haven’t read the new docs yet, I can’t say anything on that. So not a villain, not a hero, but maybe a bit of both?
