Stupid question but what has been our policy with in regards to Taiwan since 1972? I know we no longer recognize them as the legitimate Chinese government which we had done from ‘48-‘72. China is a complicated issue. Foreign policy is the big reason why I favored Clinton over Sanders in the primaries and why I especially favored Clinton over Trump in the GE.

Officially, the US recognizes the PRC as the official government of China and recognizes their claim to Taiwan as legitimate, but we mostly pay lip-service to it while maintaining business and military relations with the Taipei gov’t.
