I capitalize God in “God is a metaphor” as I’m referring to the mono-deity that most Christians, Jews and Muslims believe in - since that’s the predominant god on the planet. The gods of the Greeks, the gods of the Hindus, the gods of the Native Americans are all too numerous and idiosyncratic to mention by name, so I just call them ‘gods’…

Basically it’s just the common noun/proper noun distinction.
