Why punish?

Isn’t the intent of the justice system to protect the members of society not to cater to a sense of revenge? Does punishment actually deter violent criminals from being violent?

I think permanently removing people we know to be beyond rehabilitation from society and rehabilitating those that can be helped the most effective path toward protecting society.

REHABILITATION. Used to be the key word in incarceration. No mas, to our shame and detriment.
