I am talking about league play here in Europe (I assume it’s the same in the USA) where you standing is determined on a point system, based on how many goals you score (no goals, no points) and whether you win, lose or draw.

All of which I don’t understand. Wou win, you win, you lose you lose. Partial credit is for math exams, not competitive sports…

When it comes to soccer, I actually just keep my eye on Benfica (a Portuguese team, and my team since childhood). The ties in most if not all European leagues are somewhat penalized — 3 points for a win, 1 point for tie, 0 points for defeat. A win and a loss is better than 2 ties, so the system rewards teams who take chances.
