That’s because taking a position means being willing to defend it or, when it becomes untenable, admitting that it was a bad idea to support it. You see it in the way the GOP is slowly trying to move past anti-SSM positions as party planks. They’ll speak the pablum to supporters behind closed doors going forward, but don’t expect it to get a lot of press when the party writes up its platform in 2016.

And admitting you are wrong has been turned into something worse than committing a crime. “Real men don’t admit they are wrong.”
