I don’t know how long men retain their hair in my family, because I am the longest-lived man in my family’s memory. (That by itself is not a good sign: “Wow, he lived to be fifty-seven! At least he still has his waist-long hair.”)

My father has already outlived his father by nearly 15 years, but that’s largely because my paternal grandfather dropped dead of a massive coronary at 45. I just found out the other day that the reason his doctors realized he had angina was because he’d had a heart attack, something he had not told me in the years since he was first diagnosed. I needed a winch to drag my jaw off the floor when he told me that.
