I was just listening to part of a podcast on pre-Christian religions.

According to the lecturer, the Roman urban areas Christianized before the rural ones.

The phrase Pagan came from the Latin Paganus which meant rural dweller and implied bumpkin, rustic or rube. Heathen comes from heath dweller, heath originally being rural uncultivated/barren land, and implies the same concept of rustic.

He also discussed the concept of prayer versus magic. Prayer was a request that could be honored by the entity or not as the entity wished under free-will. Magic was the compelling of the entity by the person using that magic.

I have no idea what this all means, but there it is…
