A Cross-Cultural Tiny Desk Concert: Camila Cabello and Her Not So Tiny Band

From Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, Tiny Desk is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with an “El Tiny” takeover of the (home) concert series, featuring J Balvin, Camila Cabello and several more musicians from all corners of Latinidad.

Anamaria Sayre | October 15, 2021
To the beat of her swishing hips and swaying percussionists, Camila Cabello’s famous “Half of my heart is in Havana” reverberates across this musician-packed Miami set, with an at-home ease that feels novel for the global popstar.

Born to a Cuban mother and Mexican father in Havana, Cuba, Cabello is no stranger to blending borders and connecting worlds. As the final performance in our Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration, her El Tiny concert epitomises the cross-cultural, transnational musical identities we’ve centered over the course of the series. Each unique arrangement of her universal hits represents and explores a new facet of the identities and experiences that make up Cabello.

These stripped-down renditions of her hits “Havana,” “Real Friends,” “Señorita” and “Don’t Go Yet” include more Latin instrumentation than the recordings — presumably bringing them closer to sounds that were first introduced to her as music during her childhood in Havana, Mexico City, and Miami.

The interlude featuring a sacred Afro-Cuban Santería chant and the following performance of the unreleased, Mariachi-based “La Buena Vida,” firmly root Cabello’s El Tiny performance within two cultural traditions that don’t typically glitter under the harsh lights of a global stage.

Here, we find Camila on the precipice of a voice that magically layers pop with tradition, holding all parts of a complex identity in seamless harmony. Flanked by Cuban congueros and Mexican mariachi, all aglow under the Miami sun, Camila Cabello’s heart has never felt more whole.

They can’t really call themselves libertarian while opposing vaccine mandates. Libertarianism, social libertarianism anyways, is based on the notion you can do whatever you want up to the point where you decisions intrude upon the liberties of others. Not being vaccinated and possibly causing someone else to contract a possibly lethal disease is the exact circumstance in which gov’t intervention is appropriate from a libertarian standpoint.

I suspect I am preaching to the choir, but it still needs to be said.

You don’t need to put “social” in front of that. What you just stated is claimed by libertarians themselves to be a core belief. Both big L and and small l libertarians. Hardly any of them even understand or follow their own bullshit anymore. Which makes them basically the same as American evangelical Christians.

Growing Crops Under Solar Panels? Now There’s a Bright Idea
In the new scientific (and literal) field of agrivoltaics, researchers are showing how panels can increase yields and reduce water use on a warming planet.
wired.com

Rooftops are so 2020. If humanity’s going to stave off the worst of climate change, people will need to get creative about where they put solar panels. Now scientists are thinking about how to cover canals with them, reducing evaporation while generating power. Airports are filling up their open space with sun-eaters. And space doesn’t get much more open than on a farm: Why not stick a solar array in a field and plant crops underneath? It’s a new scientific (and literal) field known as agrivoltaics—agriculture plus photovoltaics—and it’s not as counterintuitive as it might seem.

What is also truly offensive is their message that if you are not wealthy you should die from illnesses or accidents. “Healthcare bills are the responsibility of the ill”? Who, except the wealthiest among us, can afford treatment from a serious ailment? That is their real belief: that your financial assets determine your worth as a person. True libertarians are sociopaths, every one. (Though Gary Johnson does have a real sense of humor)

From the latest email from Timothy Hughes Rare & Early newspapers:
An early occurrence of white protests against our actual history.

Africans [blacks] celebrate the abolition of the slave trade…

INDEPENDENT CHRONICLE, Boston, July 13, 1812 The most notable content is on page 3 headed: “Thanksgiving” which begins: “The Africans in Boston will keep a Thanksgiving in commemoration of the abolition of the Slave Trade, to-morrow…The Procession will form…” with further details.
Rare to find such reports with specific mention of the “Africans” [blacks] in celebration. This is believed to be the first of which became, for a time, an annual celebration. Offensive parodies of this event began appearing at these celebrations as early as 1815 to as late as 1831.

Off topic…

I was just listening to part of a podcast on pre-Christian religions.

According to the lecturer, the Roman urban areas Christianized before the rural ones.

The phrase Pagan came from the Latin Paganus which meant rural dweller and implied bumpkin, rustic or rube. Heathen comes from heath dweller, heath originally being rural uncultivated/barren land, and implies the same concept of rustic.

He also discussed the concept of prayer versus magic. Prayer was a request that could be honored by the entity or not as the entity wished under free-will. Magic was the compelling of the entity by the person using that magic.

I have no idea what this all means, but there it is…

It boggles my mind that someday, somewhere, in a history book, there will be some variation on the words, “On 1/6/2021, supporters of lame duck President Donald Trump tried to take over the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., and interrupt the certification of the electoral vote count that would seal his defeat in the November 2020 election. And yet, when all was said and done, 40% of eligible voters were still stupid enough to vote for him again in 2024.”

“…We believe strongly that legislation of this kind represents an unprecedented intrusion into the liberty of employers to operate their businesses as they see fit. Texas’ successful business climate is premised upon this fundamental liberty, but this legislation undermines it by placing employers in an impossible position between federal and state mandates. It will also subject employers to potentially crippling litigation costs at both the federal and state levels with no ability to protect themselves against this risk.”

Mad Max and The Walking Dead serve as templates for the type of society a lot of these Libertarian nutcases strive for. Just talk to any of them. They want a warlord society with roving bands of bad guys to gun down and the ability to take (kidnap) as many women/girls as they can from other warlords.

I felt kind of bad for his partner. She obviously knew what was about to happen and did her best to minimize his dancing.

The Russian professional dancers that I have met, view their profession with a deadly seriousness. Probably due to a lot of entrants competing for very few jobs. It’s a hard business. Someone like Tucker probably pained her at so many levels.

Including the fact that this was a chance for her to advertise her skills and maybe attract more students. The shortness of her appearance, and the pathetic way it went, probably did not help her in that quest.

Reminds me of the young couple who thought that they had a great opportunity when they were invited to appear on the Ed Sullivan show. The same night as the Beatles.

I am disappointed with the Johns Hopkins Covid website. A check of illinois shows the following:
% beds occupied: 73% with 10% due to Covid
% ICU beds occupied: 67%, all due to Covid

For the past several weeks the ICU beds in Illinois were 15% Covid — someone clearly entered the past week’s data incorrectly.

I finally checked Minnesota’s hospital statistics. Our ICUs are very near capacity, but only 25% of it is COVID victims, and our non-ICU availability is significantly better.

well, went through two mercury-finish american pro ii strats with the humbucker and two single coils. Both could not get the amps I’m using to translate switch changes. gear advisor theory is they may just both have been part of a bad batch that I unfortunately got two of. My theory is that there is something computerish down in the innards of them and that there’s probably a flaw in a circuit board, because I can’t imagine quality control managed to screw up that many of these while they were coming down the line. So, I’ve instead ordered an Ultra Telecaster in the Texas Tea finish. We’ll see how that goes.

I had to send back some Bill Lawrence pickups that didn’t play (the guy who installed them told me). They claimed that the installer probably pinched a wire. But they replaced them nonetheless.

I tried out some new Fender stuff over the summer at a music store near where my kid was taking driving lessons. I’ll have to look up the models. I was attracted to one that had P90-ish pickups and looked almost like my Firebird. It was horrible. Pickups sounded like they were buried under pillows and the play and feel were way off. Safe to say this was not an Ultra Telecaster.

A wooded patch next to my neighborhood was being developed a few years ago. This pushed the wildlife out of that area.

One of the neighbors decided that she felt sorry for the dispossessed critters and decided to feed them. By the time she started feeding them, the only critters around were skunks.

It took several weeks for us to convince her that this was a bad idea. Of course, the changed local ambiance may have been what really convinced her.

Alabama has moved up to #3 in US deaths per million. Over 15000 CV deaths as of yesterday.

“This isn’t the first time an out-of-stater has tried to tell West Virginian what is best for them despite having no relationship to our state.”

Here we go: Manchin’s leveraging West Virginians’ parochial paranoia concerning, and their collective resentment toward, outsiders telling them what to do as these outsiders seek to improve the quality of life for all West Virginians, thus upsetting the existing power structure that has grown strong and rich in West Virginia through exploiting the ignorance and resentments of poor West Virginians by keeping them poor, ignorant, paranoid and resentful of outsiders.

MMO currency does have some real-world value, in the case of MMOs that have implemented currency exchange. In World of Warcraft, at least for a time (dunno if this is true now), you could pay real-world currency to Blizzard in exchange for in-game currency, giving the in-game currency a nominal real-world value. Now, selling in-game currency to redeem that value was the real trick…

Si La Quieres

Translated lyrics:

If You Love Her
You want to tell her that you love her more than anyone
And as your friend, what advice can I give you?
Tell her that without her you can’t live
What you never came to feel for me

And in your eyes, I can see that tenderness
The anxiety, and love, and insanity
And in my mind I can only see
The sweet moment when you kiss her skin
And I’d die at having to admit
That you look good with her…

If you love her, go and tell her “I love you”*
You shouldn’t lose even a moment with her
In which she waits for you, and I will stay here
If you love her, go and tell her “I love you”**
You deserve to have her in your arms forever
With you forever
And I will stay here

Mexican Oompah music (Música Norteña).

Selena’s version is more popular. But I prefer Los Horóscopos De Durango version. Less slick, more authentic, grittier, I guess. And, growing up in Pittsburgh, I like polkas.

They don’t care. Call them what you want. GOP or GQP. The only thing they are interested in is the cruelty of their laws. Do they inflict the max pain and damage upon these WE deem unworthy? If so, go for it. If not, reject and try again.

They don’t care, but I keep posting because not many people are paying attention and the word needs to keep getting out.

My favorite quote on Germans/Austrians meeting American music:

“For instance, the preponderance of American pop music is based on the beat of two and four,” he [Mike Love of The Beach Boys] says. “You’ll have a lot of cultural influences that cause people to do one and three. I remember being in the Vienna Stadthalle — the town hall in Vienna, with about 12,000 people in it — and it was, like, Teutonic.”

Since it’s so quiet…

Cumbia is a very popular Latin American music form. Here’s a well known Colombian one called ‘La Zenaida”.

Armando Hernandez Y Su Conjunto - La Zenaida (Official Audio)

This one sings about a woman named Zenaida who arises very early every morning and leaves her slum to sell ripe fruit in the city. Zenaida is used here as a generic name to denote the class of poverty stricken women who barely eke out a marginal living in the cities of Columbia.

And time for me to head to bed. G’night all

But first the requisite ‘Dad’ joke:

I saw an old man fall into a well today!
I guess he couldn’t see that well.

re: #139 Dopamine Fish

MMO currency does have some real-world value, in the case of MMOs that have implemented currency exchange. In World of Warcraft, at least for a time (dunno if this is true now), you could pay real-world currency to Blizzard in exchange for in-game currency, giving the in-game currency a nominal real-world value. Now, selling in-game currency to redeem that value was the real trick…

IIRC, the Neal Stephenson novel “Reamde” cycled part of the plot around a MMO being used as the method for hackers to collect on ransomware attacks. They essentially did have a method for laundering funds out of the MMO as “real” money.
