They hope they can be first with a developing story and reap the benefits if it if justified but if the story is unjustified they just wash the egg off their faces and know, because of our 5 minute attention span and selective memories, that it will disappear. To them the benefits outweigh the costs of jumping before looking. It’s a form of bean counting.
