Hmm. Maybe I’ve been misunderstood. Atheists, and others, as civilians are not what I was talking about. States that were effectively officially atheist. Communists, and to my mind, Nazis, at the forefront.

Nations that had a State religion, be it Christian, Jewish, or Muslim, even the worst of them, didn’t and don’t compare to Communist regimes, nor to say the Aztec empire.

The comment was about Empires and States and what they’ve been responsible over the course of history, when at their worst.

Again, you’re ignoring the thirty years war. The area that is now Germany lost 15-30% of it’s population, Brandenburg lost 50 percent… the swedish army razed 1/3 of the villages and towns in the germanies.

This entire conflict was perpetrated in the name of religion. It was primarily a dispute between the catholics and protestants in the Holy Roman Empire, which spiral out of control and ended up involving pretty much every European nation.
