At that age? Could well be a maneuver to keep from losing all they own to medical expenses - medicare usually requires you to spend all your money before you get help. If one has high expense problems, they could divorce, allow the other to have a comfortable set of resources while allowing the other to legally be within the limits required by law.

No clue if that’s actually the case, but it isn’t an uncommon reality if you aren’t really wealthy.
