He is trying to head off a very unpleasant long-term disaster for the GOP.

The one silver lining to the possibility of Trumpcare passing is that it would likely result in a Democratic wave in 2018. But I don’t want 20k people to have to die, so I’d prefer that Trumpcare just fail to pass like I expect.
