Hey LT! Well ok, you’re young enough that you probably never heard of him but the instrument is the celesta - a sorta mini-Harpsichord.
Guy’s 21 years old when he writes this shit, from Lubbock, Texas (not exactly noted, at least then, as the center of musical sophistication) and he writes this song FOR that instrument to play.

Oh, I’m old enough to have heard of him… and know that the plane also included the Big Bopper and Edie Vallie (I think that’s right) but not Waylon Jennings who had given his seat to somebody else.

But that’s about as far as it goes… though I do have “Peggy Sue” playing in my head now.
